Port Angeles Regional and Blue Mountain Transfer Stations

Two transfer stations run by the City of Port Angeles handle self-hauled garbage for the Port Angeles and Sequim area. They are not interchangeable: check which one takes your load.

Hours, accepted materials and fees at public facilities change. Details here were checked in November 2026 against the operators’ own pages, linked under Sources. Call or check online before you load the truck.

Port Angeles Regional Transfer Station

  • Address: 3501 W 18th Street, Port Angeles, WA 98363, at the end of West 18th Street.
  • Hours: Monday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Sundays and legal holidays.
  • Operator: City of Port Angeles. Transfer station information line: 360-417-4875.

What it accepts

  • Household garbage, furniture and bulky items, charged by weight.
  • Yard waste, at a separate rate. Do not bag it. Sod, rocks, dirt and stumps have their own category.
  • Scrap metal, at a lower rate if brought as a separate load. Lawn mowers must be drained of oil and fuel; metal drums cut in half or with lids removed.
  • Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners, with a per-unit environmental fee. Units must be empty, with doors removed or loaded so they can be inspected.
  • Tires (no commercial loads).
  • Construction and demolition debris, with an accepted Waste Disposal Application for contracted work, including lead and asbestos test results where applicable. Asbestos only by permit and appointment.

Free recycling before the scales

The recycle center at the entrance takes plastic bottles and jars, rigid plastic tubs, tin and aluminum cans, newspaper, office paper, magazines, junk mail and flattened cardboard at no charge. Do not bag recycling. Commercial recycling is not accepted.

What it does not accept

Televisions, computers and mercury-containing lights are not accepted; electronics go through E-Cycle Washington. Household hazardous waste goes to the Moderate Risk Waste Facility on the same site.

Moderate Risk Waste Facility (same site)

After the scales, the city's Moderate Risk Waste Facility takes household hazardous waste free of charge on Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., weather permitting. It does not accept business waste. Details in our household hazardous waste guide.

Blue Mountain Transfer Station

  • Address: 1024 Blue Mountain Road, Port Angeles, WA 98362, about halfway between Port Angeles and Sequim.
  • Directions: from Port Angeles, go east on Highway 101 about 5.5 miles and turn right on Blue Mountain Road; from Sequim, go west on Highway 101 about 6.5 miles and turn left. The gate is about a mile up, on the right.
  • Hours: Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • No trailers.
  • Payment: cash, check (payable to City of Port Angeles), credit and debit cards.

What it does not accept

Large appliances, furniture larger than 4 feet by 4 feet, construction debris, tires and yard waste. Take those to the Regional Transfer Station.

Free recycling

Drop boxes for cardboard and for mixed paper and containers (plastic bottles, jars and jugs, rigid tubs and plant pots, tin and aluminum cans). No plastic bags. Motor oil and antifreeze are collected; car batteries and scrap metal are not.

Fees

Both stations charge by weight per ton, with a minimum charge per visit ($10 at the time of writing). The city publishes its current rates and updates them periodically; the per-ton figure on its pages has changed in recent years, so check before you go. A few tips:

  • Separate scrap metal and yard waste from garbage to get their own rates at the Regional station.
  • Cover and secure your load. Items blowing off vehicles are a road hazard, and unsecured loads can be cited under state law.
  • Combine trips: a single heavier visit costs less than several small ones that each hit the minimum charge.

Which one should I use?

  • Sequim and east county, small loads of bagged garbage and recycling: Blue Mountain is closer, on its three open days.
  • Furniture, appliances, yard waste, tires, debris or a trailer: the Regional Transfer Station in Port Angeles.
  • Hazardous household products: the Moderate Risk Waste Facility at the Regional station, on Saturdays.

Before you go

  • Sort the load: garbage, metal, yard waste, recycling, and anything for the hazardous waste facility.
  • Bring payment and expect to be weighed in and out.
  • Wear gloves and sturdy shoes; you unload your own vehicle.

West end and Forks

West Clallam County, including Forks, has its own transfer facilities; this guide covers the Port Angeles and Sequim area only.

If you are unsure whether an item is accepted, call the transfer station information line before you load it; it saves a wasted trip.
