Hours, accepted materials and fees at public facilities change. Details here were checked in November 2026 against the operators’ own pages, linked under Sources. Call or check online before you load the truck.
The Moderate Risk Waste Facility
- Where: 3501 W 18th Street, Port Angeles, after the scales at the Regional Transfer Station.
- When: Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., weather permitting.
- Cost: free for household hazardous waste. Business waste is not accepted.
- How: stay in your vehicle; attendants unload the items. A reuse area offers usable products free to take home during open hours.
Accepted
- Household cleaners, aerosols and spray paint.
- Pesticides, herbicides, poisons, fertilizers and garden chemicals.
- Solvents, thinners, flammable liquids and hobby chemicals.
- Old gasoline (you leave the container).
- Corrosives and oxidizers, such as pool chemicals.
- Equipment containing mercury, such as thermometers and thermostats.
- Motor oil, antifreeze and car batteries, in a separate drop-off area (also accepted at the transfer station during its regular hours).
Not accepted here
- Latex and oil-based house paint: use a PaintCare site; see how to dispose of paint.
- Fluorescent tubes and CFLs: the city reports that the state LightRecycle program was suspended on January 1, 2026. Store mercury-containing bulbs safely and do not put them in the trash until a new program is available.
- Medicines: see below.
- Business waste: businesses must use a licensed hazardous waste service.

Batteries
- Alkaline batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 9-volt) can go in the regular trash, according to the City of Port Angeles.
- Rechargeable batteries (lithium-ion, nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal hydride) are accepted at the Moderate Risk Waste Facility and at some retailers. Tape the terminals; damaged lithium-ion batteries can start fires in garbage trucks and transfer stations.
- Car batteries go to the separate oil, antifreeze and battery drop-off.
Medicines and sharps
The city lists pharmacy drop-off for most unwanted medicines and law enforcement drop boxes at the Clallam County Sheriff's Office in Port Angeles and the Sequim Police Department for controlled substances. For needles and syringes, follow Clallam County Environmental Health guidance; never put loose sharps in the garbage or recycling.
Propane cylinders
Small and barbecue-size propane tanks should never go in the garbage or a junk load, because they can explode when crushed. Many propane retailers exchange or refill tanks; ask the transfer station or Clallam County about disposal of damaged or unwanted cylinders.
Safe handling tips
- Keep products in their original, labeled containers. Never mix chemicals.
- Pack containers upright in a box, with leaking ones inside a sealed bucket.
- Transport them in the trunk or truck bed, not the passenger area, and go straight to the facility.
- Buy only what you need next time; the EPA notes that leftover products are the main source of household hazardous waste.
Common garage items and where they go
- Motor oil, antifreeze and car batteries: the separate drop-off area at the Regional Transfer Station during regular hours; motor oil and antifreeze also at Blue Mountain.
- Old gasoline and mixed fuel: the Moderate Risk Waste Facility on Saturdays; you leave the container.
- Weed killers, insecticides, rodent poison: the Moderate Risk Waste Facility.
- Pool chemicals: the Moderate Risk Waste Facility; keep chlorine products and acids separate.
- Latex paint: PaintCare, or dry it and put it in the garbage; see paint.
- Empty containers: fully empty, dry containers of most household products can go in the trash; the facility can advise on others.
Why it matters on the Peninsula
Chemicals poured on the ground or down storm drains can reach streams, the Strait of Juan de Fuca and drinking water wells. Household hazardous waste in garbage trucks and transfer stations also causes fires and injures workers. The free Saturday facility exists so none of that is necessary.
Businesses and landlords
Small businesses, contractors and property managers cannot use the household facility. They need a licensed hazardous waste contractor; Clallam County Environmental Health can advise on options.
Quick checklist
- Keep labels on and lids tight.
- Pack upright in a box, leaking items in a sealed bucket.
- Go on a Saturday between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., and check the weather.
- Paint goes to PaintCare, not the household facility.
